Welcome to the **all new** Link ChristmasBy Jeff Westover, Editor of LinkChristmas.comI read somewhere that web directories are mid-1990s technology. Given the advanced nature of search engines it seems that some folks have written off sites like this one. We don't believe it. Back in the pioneering days of the Internet the most common questions I got from site users were about resources they couldn't find on my site. You try to be all things to all people but I found as a responsible webmaster it was simply impossible to drop everything to find a resource for a user. That, I suppose, is what led us to directories and search engines in the first place. Search engines are great. I'm a devoted Google user. But don't get me wrong -- they just ain't "all that" especially when you are talking about a niche directory like this. Look, Christmas is what we do. If we find a resource we like we're not going to hope folks find it in the bazillions of links a search engine is going to give you. Besides, we've made trying to be visible in search engines almost a way of life. It isn't easy. Directories -- yes, simple little directories like this one -- gives perspective to links and cuts back on the frustration of search. It is like drinking water. Yes, it is an old idea -- but not an idea you can do without. We think directories will always be a part of the Internet. And if we have our say, this directory will always be central to Christmas online. So there. Welcome. Again. It is an all new Link Christmas -- upgraded with the latest technology of in old idea. Enjoy the new features of pagerank listing, of adding videos to your link profiles, of controlling what is said about your link and even where it appears on these pages. Those are all capabilities that search engines, for all the work you put into them, will not provide for you. Merry Christmas.
